Large French Pansy Antique Victorian Sepia Sentimental Mourning Hair Art
For your consideration is this lovely French hairwork piece from Bordeau. This large framed 19th century wall piece with domed glass shows a spray of large and small pansies. Victorians loved symbolism. Pansies are symbolic of remembrance. a family crest featuring the coronet of a Duke with two flanking lions, the shield containing what appear to be roses, and a scallop shell, or "escallop", associated with St. James and pilgrims. The glass is beautiful and in perfect condition. There are lots of lighting glares in the photos. This old domed glass is difficult to photograph. I love old glass and the character holds. Overall, an extraordinary piece. Below, a name and date of death which only partially remain legible, as the fine hair that formed the letters has come detached; Marie Allais (or Allain) de Gennes (or Gennet, Genner) 14 Juin 18- -?. There have been minor restorations and light cleaning to this piece. The backing was replaced with acid-free archival paper and archival-safe adhesives. Measures roughly 9 3/4" x 8 5/16".
