VERY RARE ANTIQUE ENGLISH 9K GOLD VICTORIAN MOURNING RING w/ MILK TOOTH & HAIR

Description

An extremely rare, very special and very sad antique early Victorian English mourning ring.
Made of solid 9 carat gold, its engraved twist-style band is inlaid with a woven hair memento, and the unusual gold twist head is set with a tiny child's tooth. It's extremely unusual for a tooth to be included in a mourning ring, they were more usually made as souvenirs of a child's growing up, as they lost their teeth. This one has a distinct mourning flavour to it, with hair section and typical inlaid windows. It will have probably been made for a wealthy member of the gentry to commemorate the death of their child.
It dates from around 1840/50 and is in good condition, with light wear/tarnish to the gold and some loss/ageing to the hair near the head. It weighs 2.2 grams and measures 11 mm across the head. The tooth is 5 mm long and its ring size is 6 ¼ US / M UK - not resizeable.
